500-Kilo Bomb Safely Defused in Afghanistan’s Samangan Province

The National Disaster Preparedness and Response Administration has said that a 500-kilogram bomb left over from past wars was discovered and safely defused in Firoz Nakhchin district of northern Samangan province.

The administration’s Mine Action Coordination Department said in a news release on Sunday that the bomb was identified after a local resident reported a possible danger.

According to the administration, the discovery and defusing operation was carried out with the assistance of the technical team of the mine-clearing organization DAFA. Officials said the Russian bomb could have posed a serious threat to the lives and property of local residents if it had exploded.

The disaster preparedness administration added that the defusing operation ended without any loss of life or property damage.

Firoz Nakhchin district is part of Samangan province in northern Afghanistan, where unexploded ordnance and explosive materials left over from past wars still pose a threat to residents in some areas.
