Thousands in three Afghan provinces gain access to clean drinking water

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says nearly 8,000 people in Badakhshan, Baghlan and Takhar provinces have gained access to clean drinking water services.

The programme, funded by the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund, includes the construction of water supply networks and systems in some areas of these provinces.

In its report, OCHA warned that millions of people across Afghanistan still face a shortage of safe drinking water, and that securing it has become a serious daily challenge for families.

The international agency stressed the urgent need for sustained investment and predictable financial aid to deliver essential assistance to vulnerable communities.

The shortage of drinking water in Afghanistan is one of the country’s pressing infrastructure problems, with a direct impact on people’s health and lives, and has so far remained without sufficient attention from Taliban authorities.

The lack of coherent plans and broad financial support has worsened the inability to improve infrastructure and basic services in the water sector.
