Afghan Power Authority Discusses Increasing Capacity of Naghlu Dam’s First Turbine

Abdul Haq Hamkar, head of the Afghan power authority (Breshna), met with Kunai Kosa, the contractor responsible for the construction of the first turbine at the Naghlu hydropower dam, to discuss project progress, technical issues, and next steps. During the meeting, a proposal was put forward to increase the turbine’s electricity generation capacity from 22 megawatts to 26 megawatts.
According to the contractor’s representative, the technical team is ready to implement the necessary modifications to boost the first turbine’s output by 4 megawatts, thereby enhancing energy production at the dam. He emphasized that, from a technical standpoint, the upgrade is feasible.
In response, Abdul Haq Hamkar described the capacity increase as an important and specialized matter, stating that the final decision will be made only after comprehensive technical evaluations, detailed reviews, and approval from relevant experts.
The Naghlu hydropower dam, located east of Kabul, is one of the country’s significant electricity generation facilities, and any changes in its turbines’ capacity could impact the electricity supply in some regions.
