Iran Seeks Compensation After Attack on Vessel in Caspian Sea

Kazem Jalali, Iran’s ambassador to Moscow, said Tehran considers the attack on a civilian vessel flying the Iranian flag in the Caspian Sea a terrorist act and is demanding full compensation for the damage. According to him, the incident killed one person and injured several others.

Speaking to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, Jalali said the vessel was carrying commercial cargo and that the attack was carried out deliberately. He described the incident as a criminal act and stressed that Tehran expects the damage caused to be compensated.

The Iranian ambassador also said Andrii Sybiha, the acting foreign minister of Ukraine, apologized for the incident during a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. Jalali, however, stressed that Ukraine must be held accountable for the attack.

He also called on Ukraine’s “European and American supporters” to accept responsibility for Kyiv’s actions and hold the country accountable. Jalali went on to accuse the West of politically selective treatment of attacks on civilian targets.

The Caspian Sea is a body of water shared by several regional countries, including Iran and Russia, and is one of the main routes for trade transport in the area.
