UNDP Says Export Businesses and Women’s Jobs Are Expanding in Northern Afghanistan
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has announced that Saleh Torhan, the organisation’s representative, visited several local businesses during a trip to northern Afghanistan that, according to the agency, play a role in job creation, export development and providing new opportunities for women.
The agency said on Wednesday, 19 August, that these businesses operate in different sectors and are seen as an example of efforts to strengthen economic activity in Afghanistan. According to the information released, the visit focused on the businesses’ capacity to create jobs and access external markets.
UNDP added that among the businesses was an Afghan company called Nasil-e-Soom, which exports thousands of tonnes of raisins to India and other markets. The organisation said that alongside exporting raisins, the company has expanded its activities into other sectors and that women are actively involved in it.
The United Nations Development Programme also said the programme has been implemented in Afghanistan with support from the European Union. The agency stressed that backing such businesses could help boost economic activity, increase exports and create job opportunities in the country.
UNDP is one of the main UN development agencies and also works in Afghanistan on projects related to livelihoods, employment and economic empowerment.
