Afghanistan’s Export Value Drops Sharply Below $600 Million in First Half of 2026

Afghanistan’s General Directorate of Statistics and Information has reported that in the first six months of the solar year 1405 (approximately March-September 2026), the country’s export value reached $598.5 million. Meanwhile, imports during the same period were reported to be about $6.656 billion.
According to the report, exports in the first half of 1404 (2025) amounted to $724.2 million, indicating a decline of $125.7 million in exports this year compared to the previous year.
This sharp decrease in exports has occurred alongside significantly higher imports, highlighting economic challenges and a negative trade balance for Afghanistan.
The General Directorate of Statistics has not provided a clear explanation for this decline so far, but the trend is fueling economic concerns stemming from Afghanistan’s political and economic developments since the Taliban took power. Various economic institutions and experts have expressed worries about the negative consequences of this situation on economic development and the livelihoods of the Afghan people.
