Taliban Says Scientific Workshops to Expand at Afghan Universities
As Afghanistan’s higher education system continues to face shortages of teaching facilities and restrictions on female students, the Taliban administration has announced that practical training programmes and specialist workshops will be expanded at universities.
The press office of the Taliban’s Ministry of Higher Education said Nida Mohammad Nadim, the acting minister, stressed the development and equipping of scientific laboratories at Afghan universities during a visit to a biology laboratory workshop.
According to the ministry, 23 professors from nine universities across the country are taking part in the workshop, where they are working on training and sharing experience related to laboratory work. Nadim also said such programmes would not be limited to biology and would also be implemented in other fields that require practical training.
He said the aim of these programmes was to raise the scientific capacity of professors, strengthen students’ practical training and connect theoretical education with applied skills. According to the Taliban-appointed acting minister of higher education, equipping laboratories is one of the basic needs of Afghanistan’s higher education system and could improve the quality of education.
Education experts also view holding specialist workshops and sharing experience among university professors as important for improving practical training. However, this comes as Afghanistan’s education system struggles with widespread problems, including a lack of facilities and ongoing restrictions on girls’ education.
