Female Health Worker Dies After Abuse by Husband in Helmand
Local officials in Helmand say a woman working in the health sector in the province died after taking several pills, in an incident they say followed persistent abuse and beatings by her husband.
Mohammad Qasim Riyaz, the governor’s spokesman in Helmand, told Ariana News that the woman worked in the health sector and had attempted suicide because of her husband’s violent behaviour. He said she died after consuming several pills.
He also rejected reports circulated on social media and said claims that a female doctor killed herself after being dismissed from her job in Sangin district were “baseless.” According to the governor’s spokesman, her dismissal from the health post was not true and the stories published on the matter were a rumour.
Officials said the woman’s husband has been arrested and will be handed over to judicial authorities for legal proceedings.
Sangin district is one of the districts of Helmand in southern Afghanistan. Helmand is considered one of the country’s major provinces, and incidents related to domestic violence there occasionally make headlines.
