Japanese Embassy Commends Significant Decline in Opium Cultivation in Afghanistan

The Japanese Embassy in Kabul, highlighting Afghanistan’s efforts in combating drug production, announced that opium cultivation in the country has significantly declined since 2022. The embassy emphasized that the fight against drugs requires ongoing efforts and that alongside the reduction in opium cultivation, alternative livelihood opportunities must be provided for farmers who previously cultivated the plant. These remarks came following the release of a report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), which highlighted an increase in drug cultivation in Afghanistan. This contradiction between the UN report and the Japanese Embassy’s statements has raised questions about the actual progress of the drug fight and its impacts on farmers and Afghan society.
