China Calls for Lifting Sanctions and Releasing Afghan Assets to Aid Economic Recovery

China’s representative at the Third Committee meeting of the United Nations General Assembly emphasized the economic and humanitarian challenges facing Afghanistan and called on the international community to adopt a constructive approach towards the Taliban administration, encouraging it to serve the interests of the Afghan people. He added that despite some announced progress in economic reconstruction and combating narcotics, Afghanistan continues to face severe economic and livelihood problems.

The representative stressed that nearly half of Afghanistan’s population requires humanitarian aid, with acute food insecurity and malnutrition—especially among children, pregnant, and breastfeeding women—remaining serious issues for the country. He noted that ongoing sanctions and reduced international assistance have worsened the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.

The Chinese envoy urged donor countries to promptly address the humanitarian funding shortfall and further called for the removal of international sanctions and the release of Afghanistan’s frozen assets held in foreign banks. He stated that such measures could improve the situation for the Afghan people and contribute to enhancing stability in the country.

In conclusion, the Chinese representative announced that China is ready to cooperate with the international community to support the peaceful reconstruction of Afghanistan. These remarks come amid ongoing sanctions and current Taliban policies continuing to negatively impact the lives and livelihoods of the Afghan population.
