Rising Bicycle Demand Coincides with World Bicycle Day

The United Nations designated World Bicycle Day in 2018 through a resolution proposed by Turkmenistan; a day aimed at highlighting the role of this simple vehicle in sustainable development and environmental protection.

The UN regards the bicycle as an effective, affordable, and environmentally friendly means of transport that can contribute to reducing air pollution, improving citizens’ health, and strengthening sustainable transportation methods. According to the UN’s perspective, expanding the culture of cycling is part of the strategies to achieve sustainable development in different countries.

In Afghanistan, amid the recent economic downturn, the presence of bicycles in urban markets has increased. Some city residents, due to decreased purchasing power and rising transportation costs, are choosing bicycles as a more cost-effective option for daily commuting.

The growth in bicycle use comes as many families, facing difficult economic conditions, seek simple and affordable solutions to manage their living expenses; a trend that has once again made bicycles one of the most commonly used vehicles in urban areas.
