Cautious Kabul Resident’s Response to Municipality Question Sparks Debate on Freedom of Expression

A video circulating on social media shows a man in Kabul refraining from answering a YouTuber’s questions about the performance of Kabul’s municipality due to fear of arrest by the Taliban authorities.

In the video, the YouTuber asks the man about his satisfaction with the municipal services; however, the man replies cautiously, saying, “I cannot speak, brother, they will take us today.” This brief statement has resonated widely among users, sparking discussions about the state of freedom of expression in the country.

Following the video’s release, many social media users described it as emblematic of the atmosphere of fear and self-censorship in society. Some expressed concern that citizens do not even feel safe during ordinary, non-political conversations.

This incident emerges amid ongoing reports that the Taliban administration has continually detained and imprisoned critics and opponents over the past five years. These actions have consistently raised concerns among human rights organizations and civil activists and prompted serious questions about freedom of expression and citizen security in Afghanistan.
