Israel summons Spanish embassy chargé d’affaires amid rising tensions
Israel’s Foreign Ministry has said it has summoned the chargé d’affaires of the Spanish embassy, in a move that comes amid escalating tensions between Tel Aviv and Madrid.
According to Al Jazeera, the step came after Spain’s youth minister voiced support for the establishment of a Palestinian state “from the river to the sea.”
Relations between Israel and Spain have become significantly strained since the start of Israel’s assault on Gaza. The Spanish government has repeatedly and sharply criticised Tel Aviv’s conduct in the war on several occasions.
Gaza is a strip on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean that has, in recent months, been the centre of widespread fighting and international reaction. Spain is also among the European countries that have taken a more critical stance toward Israel’s actions during this period.
