Hanif Atmar Says Weakening Taliban Administration Is Not Beneficial for Afghanistan

Hanif Atmar, former National Security Advisor of Afghanistan, has expressed his opposition to armed resistance against the Taliban administration, stating that weakening or overthrowing the administration through military means would not benefit the country. He emphasized that a return to armed confrontations could lead Afghanistan back to its bitter past experiences.

In an interview with Radio Free Europe, Atmar stressed that the solution to Afghanistan’s current crisis does not lie in military action. According to him, an armed approach not only fails to guarantee stability but also increases the risk of repeating the instability of previous years.

He further added that weakening the Taliban administration in the current circumstances is not in Afghanistan’s best interest and that a political solution should be sought. Atmar noted that some countries had expressed readiness to support armed resistance, but opponents of the Taliban administration within Afghanistan rejected this option and preferred a political path.

The former National Security Advisor also commented on the possibility of Pakistan changing the Taliban administration, stating, “Pakistan does not have the capability to change the Taliban administration; neither the Afghan people, the international community, nor the Taliban themselves would allow such a thing.”

Atmar’s remarks come amid ongoing uncertainty about Afghanistan’s political future, with discussions continuing about how to engage with the Taliban administration and navigate the current situation.
