Taliban Halts Private Car Operations on 16 Major Routes in Kabul to Regulate Urban Transport

The Taliban’s Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has announced the suspension of tunas (shared vehicles) and private cars with personal license plates on 16 major routes in Kabul. The ministry stated that the purpose of this decision is to regulate urban services and ensure “safe and easy” transportation for residents.

According to the ministry, transportation services on these routes will now be provided by buses, taxis, and Mercedes vehicles. Taliban officials have said this measure aims to bring more order to the city’s transport system.

The affected routes include busy and heavily trafficked areas of Kabul such as Meywand-Dashte Barchi intersection, Qambar intersection, Pul-e-Sukhteh, the university area, and several other major city highways.

Although the Taliban administration speaks of efforts to provide “standardized, organized, and affordable” services, many Kabul residents have complained in recent months about the shortage of quality vehicles, severe congestion, and the lack of clear planning in urban transport. The sudden suspension of some vehicles’ operations without detailed explanations on how passengers’ needs will be met may raise concerns among users of these routes.

The Ministry of Transport also added that the process of organizing and standardizing transport services in other parts of Kabul city is ongoing.
