UN Builds 695-Meter Flood Barrier Wall in Jalalabad to Protect Vulnerable Communities

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) announced that, with support from the UN Special Trust Fund (STFA), it has constructed a 695-meter flood barrier wall in Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province.
A large part of Jalalabad, home to hundreds of families, was previously vulnerable to seasonal floods. Local residents say that before this project, their homes and possessions faced serious risks with every rainfall.
Now, with the completion of this protective wall, many families in the area sleep more securely at night. This effective measure can prevent both human and financial losses caused by flooding.
In a context where the Taliban administration neither provides infrastructure services nor addresses the basic needs of vulnerable populations, humanitarian projects like this highlight how crucial the role of international organizations is for saving lives and livelihoods in Afghanistan.
