Taliban and WHO Stress Expansion of Polio Vaccination in Herat
While Afghanistan remains among the countries affected by polio, the Taliban administration in Herat has announced a joint emphasis with the World Health Organization (WHO) on strengthening vaccination programs in the province.
On Wednesday, July 29, the Taliban governor’s office in Herat reported that Noor Ahmad Islamjar met with Edwin Sinesa Salvador, the WHO representative in Afghanistan, to discuss the state of healthcare services in Herat and western Afghanistan.
According to the office, both parties stressed the expansion and effective implementation of the polio vaccination program to prevent the spread of polio, describing it as a primary health sector priority.
The WHO operates in Afghanistan in areas including polio vaccination, emergency health services, and support for the health system. Alongside Pakistan, Afghanistan is one of the few countries reporting positive polio cases, and vaccination efforts to control the disease continue.
