UNICEF Highlights Afghanistan’s Progress in Fighting Polio Amid Ongoing Eradication Efforts

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced that Afghanistan has made significant progress in its fight against polio; however, efforts to completely eradicate the disease continue. Tājoddīn Aiwalī, UNICEF’s representative, wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, July 8, that during his visit to Kandahar province, he met with children participating in polio vaccination programs. He also spoke with their families and closely monitored the implementation of the programs. According to Aiwalī, ensuring every child’s access to the vaccine can bring Afghanistan one step closer to a polio-free future. He emphasized that sustaining and expanding these vaccination initiatives is vital to prevent the disease’s resurgence. The UNICEF representative also expressed gratitude to partners of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, recognizing their crucial role in supporting vaccination programs in Afghanistan. UNICEF has repeatedly stressed the importance of delivering vaccines to all children, especially those in remote areas.
