Afghanistan’s DABS Engages Russian Firms for Electricity Sector Investment

The Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) announced that in a joint meeting with officials from four Russian companies, discussions were held regarding expanding cooperation and investment in Afghanistan’s electricity generation sector. During the meeting, both parties explored ways to increase production capacity and rehabilitate existing power networks.
According to Bakhtar News Agency, citing a statement from DABS, the main topics of discussion included electricity generation from thermal sources, gas, and coal; upgrading worn-out networks; and employing modern technologies to strengthen the power supply system. In recent years, electricity shortages have been a significant challenge for residents in several provinces across the country.
Mullah Abdul Haq Hamkar, the CEO of DABS, emphasized the importance of investment in power generation and system modernization to ensure mutual benefits. He stated that the company supports both domestic and foreign investors. However, experts consistently stress the need for transparency in contract processes and safeguarding national interests in such projects.
On their part, the Russian company officials presented their plans and capabilities related to combined electricity, gas, and thermal energy production using coal, comprehensive network rehabilitation, increasing thermal unit capacities, installing new turbines, and producing essential spare parts required for the networks.
At the conclusion of the meeting, it was agreed that while continuing discussions with DABS’s Investment Coordination Directorate, Russian investors would commence preliminary assessments and technical studies of power generation networks in various regions of Afghanistan.
