UN condemns attack on civilians in Russia’s Krasnodar region
The United Nations has called for an immediate halt to attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure in the Ukraine war following an attack on Russia’s Krasnodar region.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told TASS news agency that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an immediate end to attacks on local residents and civilian facilities.
Dujarric stressed that attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, wherever they occur, constitute a violation of international humanitarian law. He also said the UN chief is deeply concerned about the escalation of fighting in Ukraine.
According to reports, Ukrainian forces launched a large-scale attack on Russia’s southern Krasnodar region on the night of August 24. According to the regional emergency response headquarters, a private childcare centre was damaged in the attack and three children were killed.
Two adults and six children were also taken to hospital with various injuries. Local officials said a five-storey residential building was also damaged and two women were injured in the incident.
Krasnodar is one of Russia’s southern regions that has been hit several times during the war in Ukraine. In similar cases, the United Nations has also stressed the immunity of civilians and the prohibition on targeting civilian facilities under international humanitarian law.
