Badakhshan Emerges as Main Hub for Armed Groups Opposing Taliban Rule

Will Selber, a former American soldier and military analyst, has identified Badakhshan province as the primary center of armed groups opposing Taliban governance in a report published by the War on the Rocks journal. He wrote that over the past two years, the National Resistance Front led by Ahmad Massoud, the Afghanistan Freedom Front under Yasin Zia, and several other groups have not only maintained their presence but also increased their operations within the province.
According to the report, the National Resistance Front claimed responsibility for the killing of Fayzabad’s mayor in August, while the Afghanistan Freedom Front announced carrying out several operations in the Zebak district. Furthermore, on July 17, the Homeland Soldiers managed to capture the center of the Yaftal-e-Pain district for several hours—a development described as unprecedented since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.
Will Selber believes that Badakhshan’s mountainous terrain, remote valleys, and limited transportation routes provide a conducive environment for guerrilla activities by opposition groups. He noted that during the Taliban’s first regime, this province was also considered one of the main bases of the Northern Alliance and anti-Taliban resistance.
Nonetheless, the author emphasized that the groups opposing the Taliban have yet to hold any area under their control for a prolonged period and currently do not pose a serious threat to the Taliban administration. He added that to become a more effective force, these groups need greater coordination and the development of unified strategies.
