Poppy Cultivation Expands in Pakistan and Iran’s Balochistan After Afghan Ban

According to an analytical report by Eurasia Review, the Islamic Emirate’s 2022 ban on poppy cultivation has led to a sharp expansion of the crop in Pakistan’s Balochistan and Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan provinces. The report says more than 9,000 hectares of land in Pakistan’s Balochistan are now under poppy cultivation, turning these areas into one of the world’s major opium-producing centres.

International narcotics experts cited in the report said the shift in poppy cultivation from Afghanistan to these areas carries serious consequences for regional security and stability and could create major challenges in efforts to combat drug trafficking.

The expansion of poppy cultivation in these areas highlights the negative effects of the Taliban administration’s restrictions in Afghanistan, which, rather than reducing production, have led to its transfer to neighbouring regions. In addition to security concerns, this issue has brought adverse social and economic consequences for local communities.
