Explosion reported at Taliban security post in Herat

An explosion was reported at a Taliban security post in the city of Herat, and the group confirmed the incident while releasing limited details. Local Taliban officials did not provide a clear explanation of the exact time, location or possible number of wounded.

Syed Masoud Hosseini, spokesman for the Taliban police command in Herat, said initial investigations had been carried out and preliminary findings indicate the incident occurred “involuntarily and in connection with ammunition present at the site.” According to him, the explosion damaged the booth or security post.

Hosseini also said no civilians were hurt in the blast. He did not, however, say anything about possible Taliban casualties.

Hours before the confirmation, reports had circulated of an explosion at a Taliban security post in the eighth district of Herat city. Those reports said at least five people were injured, but the Taliban have not yet confirmed that figure.

Herat is one of Afghanistan’s key western provinces, and its capital, Herat city, is considered one of the country’s busiest areas. District 8 is also one of the urban parts of the province where security incidents receive wide attention.
