Human Rights Foundation Calls for Independent Probe Into Pakistan Airstrikes
The International Human Rights Foundation has called for an independent, transparent and credible investigation into the incident after confirming civilian casualties in Pakistani airstrikes in Kunar province. The group said reports of civilians killed and wounded inside Afghanistan were “deeply concerning.”
On Monday, the organisation stressed that countries’ commitment to fighting terrorism does not remove their responsibility to protect civilians. According to the group, claims about the identity of those targeted, as well as reports of civilian casualties, must be examined independently.
The International Human Rights Foundation also said: “Afghan civilians should never be regarded as expendable collateral damage.” It added: “Security cannot be built on civilian suffering.”
The organisation has called on Pakistan and Afghanistan to respect international law, protect civilian lives, and hold those responsible accountable if any violations are proved.
UNAMA also confirmed on Monday that at least three civilians, including a man, a woman and a girl, were killed in Pakistani airstrikes in Kunar province. According to UNAMA, four other people were also wounded in the attacks.
Kunar province is located in eastern Afghanistan, bordering Pakistan, a region that has previously repeatedly seen border tensions and concerns over the impact of the fighting on local residents.
