Afghanistan Launches $100 Million Solar Power Projects in Six Provinces

Afghanistan Electricity Company has announced that solar power projects worth 8.5 billion Afghanis are underway in the provinces of Logar, Nangarhar, Laghman, Balkh, Kabul, and Kandahar. Mohammad Sadiq Haqparast, the company spokesperson, added that some of these projects are expected to become operational in the coming days, with significant progress anticipated within the next one to one and a half years.

The goal of these projects is to generate solar electricity and reduce the country’s electricity shortages. However, serious infrastructural problems and existing limitations in energy management and electricity supply nationwide remain major challenges, which will likely affect the pace of these projects’ progress.

These projects are announced amid widespread criticism of the Taliban administration due to inefficient management in the energy sector and the severe electricity shortages. The low capacity for energy production in Afghanistan continues to be a significant concern for the daily lives of people and economic activities.
