Over 900 Square Kilometers of Afghan Land Remain Contaminated by Explosive Devices

Mohammad Yousuf Hamad, spokesperson for the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Department, announced that approximately 901 square kilometers of Afghan territory remain contaminated with explosive devices. He added that detonations of these munitions in recent years have caused numerous casualties, particularly among women and children.
Hamad stated that with financial support from the United Nations Special Fund, since December 2025, over 73,000 square meters of land have been cleared of explosives in the provinces of Kunduz and Baghlan. Nevertheless, warnings persist that this threat continues to pose significant dangers to the lives of Afghan people, especially children.
This situation highlights the ongoing vulnerability of the population to insecurity caused by leftover explosive materials across various regions of Afghanistan, with the Taliban administration yet to take substantial action to resolve this crisis.
