Wall Street Journal Says Iran Received Images of U.S. Base from Chinese Entities
Wall Street Journal reports, citing U.S. officials, that Iran received high-resolution satellite images of the deployment of American forces from Chinese entities before the July attack on the Al-Mafraq al-Sulti air base in Jordan.
According to the officials, Washington now directly links those images to the attack, which killed three American service members. U.S. officials described the case as the clearest evidence yet of the deadly consequences of support from Chinese companies for Iran during the war.
However, the American sources did not say that Beijing was directly involved in the incident. China’s foreign ministry has previously rejected such warnings, saying that “some entities” are trying to tie Beijing to the conflict.
According to the report, the release of these findings ahead of the scheduled meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Xi Jinping on October 2 has added to existing tensions between Washington and Beijing.
The Al-Mafraq al-Sulti air base in Jordan is among the facilities where American forces are present. The new Wall Street Journal report comes as the role of Chinese entities in providing technology and sensitive data to the parties involved has repeatedly drawn the attention of U.S. officials in recent years.
