UNFPA Says Women Staff Help Deliver Health Services in Afghanistan
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has said its women staff in Afghanistan continue to work to provide health services and psychosocial support to mothers and families, even as women in large parts of the country face limited access to medical care.
In a post on X on Tuesday, Sept. 17, the agency said the health, well-being and future of the women and girls who benefit from UN services are among its top priorities. UNFPA also stressed that its women staff in Afghanistan play a central role in delivering these services.
The statement comes as access to health services for women, especially pregnant mothers, remains limited in many parts of Afghanistan. A shortage of women doctors, particularly in remote areas, is seen as one of the main challenges women face in obtaining medical care.
Over the past five years, restrictions imposed on women and girls have made it more difficult for them to access health care, education and job opportunities. This situation has further highlighted the need for women staff in health and support services.
The United Nations Population Fund is one of the UN agencies working in reproductive health, maternal support and services related to women and families.
