UNICEF warns of worsening malnutrition crisis among 3.7 million children in Afghanistan
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has said the child malnutrition crisis in Afghanistan is worsening, with 3.7 million children struggling with acute wasting. According to the agency, among these children, 1 million suffer from severe acute malnutrition.
UNICEF said Afghanistan is facing a growing crisis in child nutrition and that millions of children need nutrition and treatment services to survive and improve their health.
The agency warned that cuts in financial aid have halted some nutrition services and made it harder for vulnerable children to access vital care. According to UNICEF, if this situation continues, it could further disrupt efforts to treat children suffering from malnutrition.
Referring to the worsening situation, UNICEF has called on donors to increase financial support for nutrition programmes in Afghanistan. The agency stressed that continued assistance is essential to protect children and save lives.
UNICEF is one of the main United Nations agencies supporting children and works in Afghanistan in health, nutrition, education and emergency services.
