Afghanistan’s Central Bank Destroys 2.5 Billion Afghani in Worn Banknotes

The Central Bank under Taliban administration has announced that it has destroyed 2,541,645,000 Afghani worth of worn banknotes, removing them from the country’s currency circulation.
On Sunday, 28th Saratan (Afghan calendar), the bank posted a message on its X page stating that this action is part of ongoing programs to regulate the currency in circulation. According to the institution, the mentioned banknotes were destroyed after being collected from banks and related branches.
The Central Bank described the purpose of this action as healthy liquidity management and preserving the credibility of the Afghani currency. Usually, worn, torn, or damaged banknotes are identified and separated through technical processes before being taken out of the economic cycle.
However, amid widespread banking system restrictions and cash shortages, experts have consistently emphasized the need for greater transparency from the Taliban administration regarding monetary policies and the management of reserves; a matter that can directly affect citizens’ and residents’ trust in the banking system.
