Israel Blocks Arab League Secretary-General’s Visit to the West Bank

The Arab League has announced that Israel prevented its Secretary-General from traveling to the West Bank. The trip was planned to show support for the Palestinian people and to meet with Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority. According to a statement from the Office of the Arab League Secretary-General, Palestinian authorities informed the League that Israel did not grant permission for the visit, which was scheduled for Wednesday. This trip was to be the first foreign mission of the new Arab League Secretary-General since beginning his tenure earlier this month. The statement noted that Palestinians in cities and villages face extensive restrictions, with the expansion of settlements and roadblocks making their living conditions more difficult. It also expressed concern over the increasing violence by extremist settlers in various parts of the West Bank. The Arab League emphasized the need for Israel to be held accountable for what it described as “continued crimes against the Palestinian people,” calling for active and sustained efforts to end occupation and achieve a two-state solution based on establishing an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel. The prevention of this visit comes amid long-standing security tensions, settlement expansion, and movement restrictions for Palestinians in the West Bank, a part of the occupied Palestinian territories. These issues have consistently drawn criticism and responses from regional and international organizations.
