Death Toll from Venezuela Earthquakes Climbs to 2,645

Venezuelan officials have announced that the death toll from two powerful recent earthquakes in the country has risen to 2,645. According to the Ministry of Information, more than 12,000 people have been injured, and about 15,000 others have lost their homes.

According to a report by Reuters, these figures were released by official sources on Friday, and search and rescue operations are ongoing in the affected areas. Authorities have warned that the death toll may increase as investigations continue.

The two earthquakes occurred on June 24 in western Venezuela, approximately 160 kilometers from Caracas, the nation’s capital. The first earthquake registered a magnitude of 7.2, and less than a minute later, a second earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 shook the region.

The strength of this natural disaster caused the collapse of dozens of buildings, trapped several residents under rubble, and inflicted widespread damage to public infrastructure. Rescue teams are working to extract potential survivors trapped under debris and provide medical services and temporary shelter for those displaced.

Following the earthquakes, the Venezuelan government declared a state of emergency and called on international organizations to assist in relief and reconstruction efforts. The country has also been facing economic and humanitarian challenges in recent years, and the recent earthquakes have compounded the hardships for residents of the affected areas.
