Six Dead in Shooting at Mothers and Children Center Near Hamburg

German authorities have reported that six people were killed in a shooting carried out by a 45-year-old man at a mothers and children center in the city of Stade, near the port city of Hamburg. The incident occurred around noon on Monday. According to police, five victims died at the scene, while a sixth succumbed to injuries in hospital.

According to provided information, all victims were staff members of the center, including four women and two men. Officials have suggested that the possible motive behind the shooting was a dispute related to the man’s disagreement over child-rearing issues.

Reports indicate that the suspect had visited the center for a planned meeting prior to the shooting. His three-month-old daughter and the child’s mother are reported to be unharmed. Police have confirmed the arrest of the suspect, the child’s mother, and another woman in connection with the incident.

Authorities stated that the suspect lives in the Hanover area, was born in Germany, and has Turkish heritage. Police had urged local residents to stay away from the area but later informed that there was no danger to the general public.

The area around the incident site, located on a cobblestone street lined with red stone houses, was cordoned off by security forces. Forensic experts dressed in white protective suits, alongside plainclothes officers, were engaged in collecting evidence until Monday evening.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the President of Germany, expressed deep shock over the level of violence in a place that should have been a safe space for mothers and children.

Mass shootings are less frequent in Germany compared to some countries including the United States. However, similar incidents have occurred in recent years, such as the 2023 shooting in Hamburg and the 2016 attack in Munich, both resulting in fatalities.
