EU Highlights Women’s Education and Employment as Keys to Afghanistan’s Stability and Economic Growth

The Head of the European Union delegation to Afghanistan stated that the EU does not intend to interfere in Afghanistan’s internal affairs but emphasized that education, especially for women, should not become a casualty of political decisions. He described education as fundamental to the country’s stability, growth, and future.

Veronica Bouskovic Pohar told a local media outlet that the EU urges Taliban officials to refrain from making political decisions in sectors directly related to the welfare and progress of the people. According to her, the health and education sectors are among the most important areas in nation-building and ensuring citizens’ well-being.

She also highlighted the crucial role of women in development programs and creating employment opportunities, noting that women constitute an important part of the EU’s projects. The European official added that women should actively participate alongside men in economic activities, especially in agriculture, food processing, and small businesses.

Pohar stressed that the EU has made significant investments in technical and vocational training for women and youth. Pointing to Afghanistan’s predominantly rural demographic, she said women in rural areas can play a decisive role in economic growth, and this potential is already visible in practice.

These statements come amid broad restrictions on women’s education and employment following the Taliban’s return to power. Secondary schools, high schools for girls, and universities have remained closed to them, drawing repeated reactions and concerns from the international community.

Meanwhile, Taliban officials have not announced any new stance on reopening educational centers for girls in recent days, although earlier they spoke of working on related plans. The ongoing lack of transparency continues to be a serious concern for families and social activists across the country.
