Afghan Health Minister and UNICEF Discuss Joint Monitoring of Health Services

Mawlawi Noor Jalal Jalali, the Taliban’s Minister of Public Health, met with Dr. Tajuddin Oayla, head of UNICEF Afghanistan, to discuss the joint assessment and monitoring of health services across the country. According to the Ministry of Public Health, the meeting focused on improving the operations of implementing institutions funded by UNICEF and addressing existing challenges.

The Health Minister, highlighting shortcomings in the delivery of services, stressed the urgent need to resolve deficiencies and enhance UNICEF’s attention and cooperation. This comes amid reports in recent years from residents of some provinces complaining about the quality of health services and the implementation of projects funded by international organizations.

Additionally, the Ministry’s Deputy for Health Service Delivery shared the results of monitoring activities carried out on implementing organizations in Nangarhar province with UNICEF officials. While specific details of this evaluation have not been publicly disclosed, authorities stated that the aim of the process is to improve the quality and transparency of services.

Meanwhile, Dr. Tajuddin Oayla emphasized UNICEF’s commitment to continued comprehensive cooperation and stated that the organization will assign its representatives to work with the Ministry of Public Health in conducting joint monitoring, ensuring this process is regular and effective. Given the heavy reliance of a significant portion of the health sector on external aid, transparency and accountability in the utilization of these resources remain serious demands from citizens.
