UNAMA Deputy Head Visits Balkh, Highlights Support for Women Carpet Weavers

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) announced that Giorgi G. Georgiev, Deputy Special Representative of the mission, has traveled to Balkh province and visited a women-run carpet weaving factory in Mazar-i-Sharif.

According to UNAMA’s newsletter, the United Nations emphasized its continued support for the economic empowerment of Afghan women so that they can support themselves, their families, and their communities through work and productive activities.

This visit comes amid widespread restrictions imposed by the Taliban administration on women’s education, employment, and social participation, which have led to a significant reduction in job opportunities for women in many parts of the country. Under these circumstances, economic initiatives such as carpet weaving are considered one of the few options providing income for some women.

The United Nations has repeatedly stressed the importance of women’s participation in Afghanistan’s economy, describing the restrictions on women’s work as obstacles to the country’s economic growth and social stability. Nevertheless, the future of women’s economic activities remains dependent on the policies and decisions of the Taliban administration.
