UNICEF Reports Ongoing Clean Water Crisis in Earthquake-Affected Areas of Afghanistan

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has stated that, one year after the deadly earthquake in eastern Afghanistan, many affected families still lack adequate access to clean drinking water. According to the agency, the shortage of safe water remains one of the core challenges in the earthquake-affected regions.

UNICEF’s report highlights that the need for clean water in these areas remains critical, with families facing daily difficulties in securing enough water. The absence of sustainable water infrastructure and damage to existing facilities have further strained the residents of these regions.

UNICEF added that, with financial support from the UN Humanitarian Aid Fund, solar-powered water systems and deep wells have been constructed in some affected areas to facilitate access to clean water for the population.

However, the continuing unmet needs indicate that addressing the earthquake’s aftermath has not been fully accomplished. With crisis management responsibilities resting under the Taliban administration, ongoing fundamental issues such as access to safe water have raised concerns about the capacity for response and long-term planning for reconstruction in these areas.
