Solar-Powered System Provides Safe Drinking Water to Mountain Village in Ghor

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced that a mountainous village in Ghor province now has access to safe drinking water through a solar-powered water supply system. At the center of the village, a water reservoir has been constructed that delivers clean water to residents’ homes via a pipeline network.
According to UNICEF, this system operates using solar energy and ensures sustainable access to safe water for all families in the village. Ghor is one of Afghanistan’s mountainous provinces where many areas have faced a lack of basic infrastructure, especially safe drinking water.
The management and maintenance of this system have been entrusted to the local community. The village residents are responsible for regulating, caring for, and maintaining the facilities—an approach that, according to UNICEF, plays a key role in the sustainability and longevity of development projects in remote areas.
Development experts emphasize that direct community participation in managing infrastructure projects increases the sense of ownership and responsibility, preventing premature deterioration of the facilities.
