US General: Afghanistan Remains a Focal Point of Terrorist Threats

A senior US military official has stated that Afghanistan continues to be one of the main focal points of American security oversight regarding the activities of militant groups. According to him, despite several years having passed since the withdrawal of US forces, threats emanating from the country still hold a prominent place in Washington’s security calculations.
American media reported on Friday, May 15, that Cooper, during a hearing before lawmakers, said Afghanistan “remains at the forefront of terrorist activities” monitored by the United States. He emphasized that further detailed examination on this matter requires classified meetings.
According to this military official, the United States is striving to contain and suppress potential threats from Afghanistan through cooperation with regional partners. He added that Washington continuously monitors the regional situation and targets any identified threats.
These remarks come amid ongoing concerns since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021 about the activities of extremist groups within the country. Despite these concerns, the Taliban administration has denied the presence of terrorist groups on Afghan soil and stated it would not allow the use of the country’s territory against others.
Meanwhile, the US State Department had earlier warned in response to Russian officials’ comments about cooperating with the Taliban that no country should align with what it called “malign actors”—a stance reflecting the international community’s continuing sensitivity to Afghanistan’s security situation.
