Kabul and Moscow Discuss Expanding Trade at Kazan Forum

Nadamohammed Nadim, Taliban’s acting Minister of Higher Education, met with Alexey Overchuk, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, on the sidelines of the Kazan International Forum to discuss the development of economic and trade relations between Afghanistan and Russia. Both parties emphasized the expansion of direct trade and the further activation of the joint economic commission.

According to released information, the main focus of the meeting was to strengthen economic cooperation and create new opportunities for trade between Kabul and Moscow. In recent years, Russia has sought to maintain and expand its economic relations with Afghanistan in certain sectors.

Noureddin Azizi, Taliban’s acting Minister of Industry and Trade, also stated that efforts by some groups to harm relations between Kabul and Moscow must be prevented. He did not provide details about these “groups,” but stressed the continuation of bilateral cooperation.

Meanwhile, the Russian side expressed hope that economic and trade relations between the two countries would develop further. This comes as the Taliban administration has yet to be recognized by many countries, and the expansion of its foreign economic relations faces legal and political challenges; a situation that makes transparency and accountability in economic agreements increasingly necessary.
