US Places Hope on China’s Role in Iran Deal Negotiations

Reuters reports that several US officials believe China could play a key role in persuading Iranian decision-makers to accept a deal. According to these sources, aides to President Donald Trump consider China one of the few countries with the capacity to directly influence Tehran.
Based on the report published early Thursday, the US Treasury Secretary is expected to raise the issue of facilitating the purchase of Iranian oil by two Chinese banks in upcoming talks. If implemented, this measure could be seen as part of the process to reduce economic tensions related to the Iran dossier.
Reuters also cited sources claiming that Washington and Beijing agree that no country should charge fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s vital energy transit points, and any tension there could have widespread economic consequences.
Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy in Washington told Reuters that the immediate priority regarding Iran is to prevent a return to war by any means. This stance comes after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had previously stated that Washington had asked Beijing to use its influence to help manage the crisis in West Asia and the Strait of Hormuz.
