US Refuses to Support International Organization for Migration’s ‘Progress’ Declaration

The United States Department of State has announced that it will not support the so-called ‘Progress’ declaration related to the International Organization for Migration. This decision was made based on what American officials described as ‘contradiction with national interests.’
In a statement from the department, Washington expressed its disagreement with the United Nations’ efforts to ‘promote and facilitate migration alternatives to the United States and other Western countries.’ According to American officials, such approaches are not in alignment with the country’s immigration policies.
US officials emphasized that, in their view, some proposed policies within this declaration could impact the domestic priorities and strategic interests of the United States. For this reason, the US has refrained from formally joining or endorsing this document.
The International Organization for Migration, operating under the United Nations umbrella, has in recent years introduced plans and declarations aimed at regulating and managing global migration trends. However, Washington’s recent stance signals that there are disagreements between the US and some international bodies regarding immigration policies.
