Two-Day Workshop Held to Improve Quality of Addiction Treatment in Afghanistan

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) announced that a two-day workshop on quality assurance review in the treatment of substance use disorders was held in Afghanistan. The program was supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and brought together national experts, representatives of the World Health Organization, and other partner organizations.
The main goal of the workshop was to establish a consensus on key quality criteria for the treatment of substance use disorders—criteria that can provide a clearer framework for delivering standardized and people-centered services in treatment centers.
Organizers stated that strengthening the quality assurance system is an important step towards improving treatment services for individuals suffering from addiction in the country, a sector that for years has faced a shortage of resources, lack of uniform standards, and managerial challenges.
While the demand for effective addiction treatment services in Afghanistan is considered extensive, many experts believe that without transparent policymaking, sustainable investment, and accountable oversight by the Taliban administration, access for residents to quality addiction treatment services will remain limited.
