UNICEF Reports 289 Civilian Casualties Amid Ongoing Taliban-Pakistan Border Clashes

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has reported that continued border clashes between the Taliban administration and Pakistan have resulted in at least 289 civilian deaths and injuries. According to the organization, a significant proportion of the victims are women and children, and the humanitarian crisis in the country is escalating.

According to a UNICEF report published on Monday, May 11, these casualties were recorded between February 26 and March 17. Airstrikes, artillery, and drone attacks have affected at least ten provinces, including major urban areas such as Kabul, raising serious concerns about civilian protection.

UNICEF added that these attacks have caused widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure, including residential homes, telecommunications facilities, and commercial buildings. The continuation of such a situation underscores the Taliban administration’s weakness in providing nationwide security and protecting the lives and property of residents, increasing criticism of the crisis management.

The report states that around 115,000 people have been displaced due to insecurity, with more than 40,000 officially registered and assessed. The closure of border crossings and rising insecurity have also disrupted markets, causing staple food prices to increase between 20 and 40 percent.

UNICEF has warned that health, nutrition, and education services have been severely affected, with many centers either destroyed or forced to cease operations. As a result, thousands of children have been left unable to attend school — a situation that, if prolonged, will have long-term consequences for the country’s future generation.
