Herat Laboratory Equipped with $5 Million in Advanced Equipment to Boost Drug and Food Quality Control

Officials from the Herat Public Health Directorate have announced the procurement of nearly $5 million worth of advanced laboratory equipment to strengthen the province’s drug and food laboratory. They said this move will significantly enhance the capacity for testing and quality control of medicines and food products.
Dr. Feroz Ahmad Yarzada, head of the Drugs and Food Department at Herat Public Health Directorate, stated that this equipment was provided by the General Directorate of Drugs and Food of the Ministry of Public Health, with about half of it already transferred to Herat. He added that once fully installed and operational, the laboratory’s services will expand, allowing for more standardized and comprehensive testing.
He described this investment as essential and noted that the laboratory currently conducts limited testing, especially in the food sector. However, after the full completion of the equipment installation, its services will extend to broader quality control of medicines as well.
Meanwhile, Abdul Samim Rasouli, head of the Drug and Health Products Quality Control Team at the Western Zone Laboratory, said the full activation of this center would benefit traders and manufacturers, as sample testing processes will become faster, more accurate, and more standardized.
Officials also emphasized that with the full operation of this laboratory, the supervision of medicine and food quality at key border crossings—including Torghundi, Islam Qala, and Roshanak—will be strengthened, preventing the entry of low-quality medicines and health products into the country.
