Criticism of Taliban’s Inconsistent Treatment of Prisoners Following Release of Fawzia Koofi’s Family

Following the announcement of the release of three members of Fawzia Koofi’s family from Taliban-run prisons, numerous Afghan journalists and human rights activists have questioned the manner in which the Taliban administration deals with detainees.

Farhanz Forotan, an Afghan journalist, stated that while some Afghan journalists have been imprisoned by the Taliban administration for months and even years, family members of a well-known political figure are freed within a short time. He described this difference in treatment as “questionable” and criticized the lack of a consistent standard for prisoner releases.

At the same time, Zarifa Ghafari, former mayor of Maidan Wardak province during the republic era, welcomed the release of Koofi’s family and emphasized that efforts should be made to free other detainees, especially women’s rights activists and girls who, according to her, have been held for a long time. She added that if political pressure, efforts by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), and social activism can lead to the release of relatives of a prominent figure, this capacity should also be used for other prisoners.

These reactions come as Fawzia Koofi had previously reported the detention of several of her family members by the Taliban administration and announced yesterday that three of them had been released. The Taliban administration has not yet issued an official statement regarding this matter.

The increase in these questions has once again made the status of prisoners and the mechanisms for their release a central topic of public debate; an issue that remains unclear due to a lack of transparency and accountability from the Taliban administration.

These developments occur weeks after several senior Taliban officials invited some former Afghan politicians residing abroad, including Fawzia Koofi, to return to the country. Koofi has not responded to the recent reactions so far.
