Afghanistan Currently Supplies 15.7% of Its Oil Needs from Domestic Production

The Head of Economic Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that currently, approximately 15.7% of Afghanistan’s oil consumption is met through domestic production.

Shafiq Azam, Head of Economic Relations at the ministry, wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) page that Afghanistan imports nearly three million tons of oil annually from various countries. Despite this level of imports, part of the market demand is satisfied by domestic sources.

He added that, according to new plans, oil extraction will increase in the near future, and it is expected that the share of domestic production will cover up to 29.75% of the local market consumption.

Afghanistan, with some oil-rich areas, especially in the northern part of the country, has long been trying to reduce its dependency on energy imports. However, the lack of adequate infrastructure and sustainable investment remains one of the main challenges in this sector. The Taliban administration has previously announced plans to develop natural resource extraction, but the extent to which these plans have been implemented and their impact on reducing reliance on imports remain questions for economic experts.
