Indian Police: Young Man Amputates Own Leg to Gain Disability Advantage for Medical College Admission

Indian police have reported that Suraj Bhaskar, a 20-year-old young man from India, deliberately amputated his own leg to take advantage of special disability quotas for admission to a government medical college. This incident occurred after he had failed twice in the nationwide medical college entrance examination in India.

According to Indian media outlets, Bhaskar’s brother had previously filed a complaint with the police claiming that the young man’s leg was amputated by “unknown individuals” on January 17 of this year. Initially, this claim was registered as a criminal case.

However, police say forensic examinations revealed that the leg was amputated using a mechanical device, ruling out the possibility of the leg being cut with an ordinary knife. Additionally, the discovery of syringes at the location where Bhaskar was found supports the likelihood that local anesthesia was used to prevent immediate pain during the amputation.

The police added that examinations of Bhaskar’s mobile phone and testimonies from those close to him also indicate premeditation and an attempt to fraudulently gain admission. A close friend stated that Bhaskar had a strong desire to continue medical studies through the government route.

According to police information, Bhaskar had previously attempted to obtain fake disability documents but was unsuccessful. This case has now sparked new legal debates in India regarding which penal code provisions apply in cases of intentional self-harm for educational fraud.
