Democrats raise prospect of Trump impeachment if they win House majority

The Hill has reported that U.S. Democrats may once again put the impeachment of President Donald Trump on the agenda if they win a majority of seats in the House of Representatives.

According to the report, Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic minority leader, has not ruled out using the mechanism. He said prominent Democrat on the Judiciary Committee Jamie Raskin and Democrat on the Oversight Committee Robert Garcia could lead the process.

The Hill wrote that Democrats need three more seats to win back control of the House of Representatives. According to Jeffries, alongside discussion of Trump’s impeachment, the party will also seek to repeal tariffs imposed on U.S. trading partners and end the war against Iran.

During Trump’s first presidency, the U.S. House of Representatives launched impeachment proceedings once in 2019 over military aid to Ukraine and again in 2021 after his supporters attacked the Capitol building, but the Senate blocked his removal in both cases. Under the U.S. political system, the House has the power to initiate impeachment, while the final decision on removing a president rests with the Senate.
