UN Establishes Specialized Clinics for Female Prisoners in Kabul and Herat

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in collaboration with international organizations, has established specialized health clinics for female prisoners in the prisons of Kabul and Herat. Additionally, the organization has launched a day-visit center for women addicted to drugs in the city of Herat.

This initiative is designed to provide essential health and social services to vulnerable women, including HIV prevention and treatment, psychological counseling, and support for reintegration into their families. The program also offers life skills and vocational training opportunities for incarcerated women, along with support for their reintegration into society after release.

Given the high level of needs in this area, the United Nations has announced that it aims to expand its efforts to increase women’s access to healthcare facilities, employment, and social rehabilitation.

In a context where the Taliban administration has severely restricted women’s access to essential services, including healthcare and education, the actions of international organizations such as UNODC highlight the urgent need to address the humanitarian and social crises facing Afghan women.
